What is self-esteem?
Self-esteem is a person’s evaluation of their worth. It is a judgment of oneself and an attitude towards oneself.
A lack of self-esteem can develop when you believe you are “not good enough” at doing something…

- Making a presentation at work
- Meeting new people and talking about yourself
- Or even simple daily tasks at work or at home.
This can happen due to many reasons. Some examples are…
- Because you have tried to do it and failed
- You have seen someone else do it well and believe others can do it better
- Or someone with authority in your life said you aren’t good enough.
As a result, you may lose overall trust in your ability to get ahead in life or to continue doing other things that you are already good at.
You might use this filter of “I’m not good enough” as a way of experiencing your world and a judgement of your perceived general lack of capabilities.
If not worked on, low self-esteem can lead to depression, emotional shutdown and other serious issues.
A person with low self-esteem may appear to others as shy, emotional, fearful or anxious, overly sensitive, discouraged and hesitant to try new things or take on opportunities.
