You might feel restless or irritable, struggle to sleep properly, or suffer from muscular tension.
In more acute forms (panic attacks) you could find yourself sweating, shaking, having difficulty breathing, pounding heart, quivering voice, and so on.
So what exactly is anxiety?
It’s an emotional state where you think about a future challenge (e.g. flying), believe it will be highly significant (e.g. major turbulence) and that you won’t be able to respond appropriately (i.e. lose control).
This creates a fear response – even weeks before a flight. The fear typically increases as you board the plane and can lead to an anxiety attack.
It’s actually quite normal to think about looming challenges and your ability to respond to them. In order to act, we need to make guesses about future events. These guesses have the ability to generate hope or fear, happiness or pain.
The anxious mind
To an anxious mind, however, the significance of the danger appears increased and your ability to respond appropriately feels lessened, leading to fear and even pain.
Anxiety and panic attacks are increasing along with the demands on our lives. Anxiety can impact the quality of daily life, and lead to unwanted habits to manage the anxiety. The associated stress can also lead to health issues.
Learning how to deal with anxiety is therefore an absolutely crucial skill – and one you will have for life.
