- Do you have a lot on at the moment?
- Does it sometimes feel like you’re juggling 10 balls in the air and something’s going to give?
Dealing with stress is part of daily life. In today’s fast-paced world, it seems the only people with no need for stress management techniques are those with the lifestyle of a monk living in the mountains!
Stress is a natural reaction of your body and mind to both good as well as bad experiences. The body responds by releasing hormones and increasing your breathing and heart rates. More oxygen is sent to the brain to give you energy to respond to a problem and this helps you to cope with tough situations.
Any situation that puts a high demand or pressure on you, or forces you to adjust, can be stressful.
Other than your mind, severe stress can affect all your major body systems including central nervous, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, muscular, digestive, reproductive and immune system.
People have various stress triggers. At work it could be to do with being unhappy in the job, working long hours, facing harassment, job security and so on.
Life stresses can have a big impact too. Friends or a lack of friends, divorce, death of a loved one, moving to a new home, illness, a traumatic event, financial obligations and more. If unchecked they can lead to anxiety, constant worry and depression.
Each stress trigger leads to the need for an effective stress management strategy…
